Manufacturer of precision metal stampings makes versatile wire termination product samples available to members and attendees at the Wiring Harness Manufacturer’s Association Conference

ETCO Incorporated today announced that it will make available to attendees of the Wiring Harness Manufacturer’s Association Conference its updated Insulation Displacement Connector (or IDC for short). The connectors will be available for viewing by conference members online or through contact with ETCO representatives. Throughout the conference and afterwards, attendees and members will be able to contact ETCO representatives on usage, custom development and manufacturing for individual projects.

Custom Insulation Displacement Connectors are versatile products manufactured exclusively by ETCO for usage in a variety of industries including telecommunication, aviation, and networking applications among others. The IDC connectors work by mechanically forcing unstripped wire under moderate pressure into a V-shaped fork. The inside edges of the fork are blades that slice through the insulation as the wire is pushed between them. As the insulation is cut and pushed aside, the bare wire is exposed and comes in contact with the terminating blades. The blades also penetrate any surface oxides that may be on the wire. These Insulation Displacement Connectors are used as a means to reliably and cost-effectively connect high volumes of wires for power and data applications.

ETCO’s Insulation Displacement Connectors were developed using a multi-step custom precision stamping process by reversing the traditional manufacturing sequence. ETCO engineers discovered that doing this resulted in a higher quality product due to the high level of automation involved while also eliminating excess scrap to save costs. These cost-savings in the manufacturing process as a result were passed on to customers.

The IDC product is supplied in strip form for automated processing equipment and can be made in sizes from .010” to .032” thick from brass, tinned brass, phosphor bronze and beryllium copper. ETCO General Manager, Ralph Jacques, states that “These connectors are an invaluable product when it comes to connecting large volumes of wire for usage in a countless number of applications.”

The Wiring Harness Manufacturer’s Association Conference members and attendees can view photos and datasheets of the product on the Insulation Displacement Connector microsite online at www.etco.com/idc.
