ETCO Incorporated’s Recent Coil on Plug Testing Demonstrates How Automotive Manufacturers Can Save Time and Money using Mated Terminal Connections

Bradenton, FL (PRWEB) June 14, 2012

ETCO Incorporated has released the results of a two year comparative automotive ignition study. The study was developed to provide conclusive information on the best type of connections in these ignition parts. Inspired by technical service bulletins having to do with coil on plug service problems, recalls and various other issues, ETCO directed its engineers to develop a study that would focus on different types of ignition connecting devices. ETCO’s engineers began this study in January 2010 and continued this culminating with the results phase in 2012. Initial results demonstrated that mated terminal connections, when applied to coil on plug systems, performed better than spring connections.

The recent spate of technical service bulletins and recalls specific to coil on plug assemblies have left executives and engineers alike in the automotive industry wondering where the problem exists in the connection. ETCO engineers ran several tests including static resistance voltage drop, effects of vibration and a myriad of other tests. The results of the testing were so conclusive ETCO engineers prepared a white paper that outlined the findings. Among some of the results documented, mated terminals exhibited superior retention forces, lower electrical resistance and no electrical arcing versus the typical arcing one would find with a loosely mated spring connection.

ETCO’s manager of new project development Ed Jacques authored the white paper titled “Under the Boot” with results from the extensive testing. Mr. Jacques states, “The results of the comparisons prove decisively that mated terminal connections are superior in every way versus spring-type device utilized with coil on plug ignitions.” He continues, “Consumer complaints about intermittent automotive starts, reduced gas mileage and skipping can in many instances be traced back to this spring based connections.”

ETCO’s “Under the Boot” white paper can be found on the ETCO.com website. Ed Jacques’ recent testing for ETCO can also be found in the April 2011 issue of Assembly Magazine “Sparking Innovation”.
